Why
The main door (mukhya dwara) should open to an auspicious quarter — North, East, or the sacred North-East. A South-West entrance is traditionally discouraged.
At finer resolution the entrance is read on the 16-point compass: the North-East is most auspicious, the South-West is avoided, and within a favourable wall the door is best shifted toward the North-East.
